Purpose

Unless you have been hiding under a rock I’m sure by now you are aware of Michael Jackson’s death. There has been a lot of coverage of fan reaction. One that I find troubling was a comment made by a young Japanese lady who came to Los Angles for the funeral.

Michael Jackson is my life. Without him I have no purpose.

Such a sad and misguided statement. Obviously, she was distraught over the loss of someone she considered important in her life. Jackson was not a friend or relative. In fact, it was almost impossible for her to have even met him much less had a relationship with him.  Yet, her entire reason for existing was tied to him.

This young lady was created for a reason far greater than hero worship.  In fact, we all were.  Of course, the question of purpose and meaning is one that we all must tackle.   According to Westminster Shorter Catechism humans were created for a greater purpose.

Q. 1. What is the chief end of man?
A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

The writer of Ecclesiastes describes his search for meaning in great details. He has tried wisdom, power and material things but all unsatisfying and meaningless. In the end he finds that purpose and meaning can only be found in a God.

The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. Ecclesiastes 12:13 (ESV)

Personally, I have found that when I search for meaning or purpose apart from God I end up disappointed and frustrated. In John 10:9-10 we learn that Christ came not only to give us life but purpose and meaning.

⁹ Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. ¹⁰ The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. John 10:9-10 (NLT)
