Today’s SWF is a follow up to this week’s My World Tuesday entry. It featured a pictorial tour of one of Gainesville’s most famous places, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field A.K.A. The Swamp. The Swamp is home to the University of Florida’s Gator Football team.  In 2006-2007, UF did something few schools have done. The Gators brought home 3 national championships in 366 days: 2006 & 2007 Men’s Basketball Champions and 2006 Football Champs.  Forunately, for Ohio State they were only defeated by UF in 2 of the three championship games (Football & 2007 Basketball). Since I have already posted pictures of the Swamp this week I decided to only post pictures that included sky shots for today’s post.

Halloween or Reformation Day

Personally, Halloween has never been a big deal for me. My mom didn’t like the idea of children going house to house and begging for candy so the only trick-or-treating I did was at my grandparents or other relative’s houses. I’m not really into costumes or scary things either.

On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the doors of the Castle church in Wittenberg, Germany.  Luther was questioning church doctrine particularly the practice of indulgences. His actions deepened the growing rift between Luther and the Catholic Church. This event would eventually lead to Luther’s ex-communication and begin the Reformation.

I prefer to observe Reformation Day rather than Halloween. I would rather remember the actions of a man who chose to stand up for his convictions than a day for candy and costumes.

One of the most famous landmarks in Gainesville is Ben Hill Griffin Stadium a.k.a The Swamp. The Swamp is home to the University of Florida football team. The Swamp has seen action by three Heisman winners and two national championship teams.

A Chicago teen was busted for illegally operating a commuter train. It seems this aspiring Einstein took pictures of himself and then posted them on his MySpace page.  Yep, that’s right he provided the authorities with photographic proof of his stunt. Metra officials received a phone call a couple of weeks ago about the prank.

And The Winner is …

Former Miss Teen Louisiana Lindsey Evans, and three of her aspiring rocket scientist friends Jordan James, Jennifer Martin, and Morgan Goleman seem got into a bit of more trouble than they counted on when they skipped out on a $40 something tab Posados Café in Bossier City. Her highness and her royal court apparently became miffed with the slow service and decided the best course of action was to leave.  Unfortunately, Evans left her purse behind.  When the resturant employees checked the purse for an id they found a little bonus. It seems that Evans also left her pot behind.  Of course, the restruant called the police. Evans and her buds made it even easier for Bossier City’s finest by returning to the resturant to retrive the purse. So the resturant employee’s got a little sweet revenge on some snotty customers.

Parwez Kambakhsh listens to allegations against him at his trial in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Tuesday.

An Afghan court sentences a 24-year-old former journalism student Parwez Kambakhsh to twenty years in jail for asking questions in class. According to Islamic law, he could have face the death penalty. His crime was asking questions about women’s rights.  Kambakhsh’s lawyer was unable to question potential witness’s until the night before the trial.  One of the witness’s testified that he was forced to testify against Kambakhsh or face expulsion from school by one of the professors.  Kambakhsh may appeal the ruling.

In a country where we can say just about anything and face little if any consequences I think we sometimes take freedom of speech for granted. It seems that some are quick to cry violation of free speech anytime they are not allowed to say anything.  I’ve even had someone accuse me of violating his first right to free speech by moderating comments that I felt were inappropriate.

Today’s SWF is the third installment featuring photos I took at Universal Studios Orlando (that is Florida not California)  during  Rock the Universe in September. All the shots today were taken at Seuss Landing in Islands of Adventure. Universal Studios Orlando is divided into two parks Islands of Adventure and the Studio part.
