My Blog
Just a quick disclaimer. Unless otherwise noted most if not all of the articles posted on my blog are my original work. As a result I get very offended when someone merely reposts my writing on their own blog.
If you are one of those bloggers who is too lazy to write your own stuff that is great but LEAVE MY STUFF ALONE. Do not repost my stuff along with the junk you sponge off others. Maybe if you are unable to come up with your own stuff then that should be a clue that blogging isn’t your thing.
Also, when I call you on it do not quickly make a bunch of original posts on the same day to try to mask the fact that for weeks you have been stealing others work and only post one original item every couple of weeks. Or whine about my giving you attitude. I guess for those bloggers who are accustomed to stealing from others then it might be hard to understand why someone gives you attitude when you steal their stuff. The slug who was the inspiration for this blog even had his comments turned off and had pages of blogs with no comments. I guess that prevents the original authors from slamming him. I may not like or agree with every comment but comments make things more interesting.
Why do I get offended by someone stealing my stuff? First, it is mine. I created it and in some cases spent a lot of time and energy coming up with ideas. Yes, there are days when I post about something I read somewhere else but I try not to repost content, rather summarize, comment or just point you in the direction of the source. Consider my postings from last week:
- Monday I wrote a blurb about expanding my Blogroll.
- Tuesday featured a little blurb about instructions for modding a Guitar hero control like David Crowder uses for the song Neverending.
- On Wednesday I posted something about a new film being made about Billy Graham with a link to the original article.
- Thursday featured a piece I wrote about the education crises in Florida. Also, this is the piece that the slug decided to steal a rather long quote. The quote was longer than what little original content he wrote.
- Friday is always Sky Watch Friday with photographs I took myself.
- Saturday featured a post about the new Third Day release and a video clip about the making of the project. Look for a review of the project later this week.
The slug claimed that he was helping improve my readership by posting he found interesting. Well on both Tuesday and Wednesday I wrote about something I found interesting and was able to do so without reposting their content. BTW, I have had no hits from the slug. My guess is he has very few if any readers.
I have no problem with someone responding to something I have written about or giving me a hat tip for an idea. I just do not want other people stealing my work.

New Third Day Release
One perk of working in the bookstore is preview copies of new releases. Today I got my copy of Third Day’s new project Revelation. It may be the best CD Third Day has released yet. I’ve played it most of the day but only had about an hour to really just sit and digest the music. It is amazing. I’ll post a better review later but for now you can enjoy this clip about the making of the project. Oh, the street date is July 29, 2008, Enjoy!

Sky Watch Friday: Palm Trees
More pictures with my new toy. I am enjoying playing with it. These shots my be reminiscent of a beach or the island from Lost but were really taken on the University of Florida campus. I am amazed by the amount and variety of vegetation in Florida. It is a cool to see palm trees, pine trees and other trees mixed together.

For more Sky Watch visit Tom.

Florida Education Crisis
For the past several months the local news has been full of stories about budget issues in Florida. There has been a movement to reduce taxes in the state. Florida is one of the few states with no income tax. As a result of budget cuts all levels of education are suffering from elementary through college. The local school district is really hurting. We live in one of the lowest paying and poorest counties in the state. Part of the reason for this is that a large portion of the land in the county is owned by the University of Florida and is therefore tax exempt. The county school district has taken drastic measures to reduce expenses. All first and second year teachers have been pink slipped. Other proposed suggestions for reducing expenses include cutting art and music classes on the elementary level and reducing electives for secondary schools, reducing the number of media specialist (librarians) and reducing special education services. One of the most troubling propositions is to reduce the school week from 4 1/2 days to 4 days on the elementary level. The state of the education in Florida is disconcerting for many reasons.
Yes, reducing eliminating music, art, electives and media specialists will reduce expenses. It will also greatly impact the educational experience. Music and art are an important part of a well rounded education. For me electives were an important part of my education. I still use and remember the skills I learned in music, office skills, and home economics classes, can’t say that for many of my required classes especially science and math. In upper elementary school music classes where an oasis in what can best be described as an educational desert. From 4th-6th grade the only teacher who really expressed an interest in my academic success or even challenged me was my music teacher. Mrs. T’s class was on of my favorite places it was the one class where I was not judged because of my learning disabilities and ADHD. In high school electives and extra-curricular activities were my motivation to pass my other classes.
The idea of shortening the school week for elementary students is just mind boggling. First, the school day is shorter anyway. Second, they only have classes 4 1/2 days. There is barely enough time to cover the required subjects.
Florida has a large number of retired snow-birds who have fled from New York, New Jersey and other north eastern states to escape the winters and high taxes. They see no reason to support education in Florida; it is just one more reason to increase taxes. Their children are grown and still live in New Jersey and other north eastern states. Their grandchildren are getting a quality education at some of the better public schools in the country. Drastically cutting funding education does not effect them or at least not directly.
I am not necessarily a supporter of public education, guess I taught in public schools long enough to become jaded and cynical. However, what is happening in the Florida and Alachua County really concerns me. Public education is important and should be a priority. Teachers and students deserve support. Lowering standards and extreme budget cuts will eventually hurt the students and indirectly our future.
